Elderly dog with the saddest eyes is dumped at the shelter because he’s ‘too old’

Consider being told that due to your advanced age, you are no longer desired. That was the harsh reality for a charming 13-year-old Chihuahua mix named Chico, who was abandoned by his owners at the Lancaster Animal Care Center in Los Angeles, California, as reported by ilovemydogsomuch.

In their kindness, the shelter staff placed the small dog in the medical ward where the environment was significantly calmer. They didn’t want to stress him further. Unfortunately, this placement meant that the public was unable to see the little fellow. That was until a special visitor came along.

Rita Earl Blackwell, a shelter photographer, dropped by to visit Chico. She quickly noticed his worried gaze. As soon as she showed him some affection, his demeanor immediately transformed. His tail began wagging, clearly pleased by her attention.

Rita took some photographs and posted them on Facebook. A few days later, Hillary Rosen from A Purposeful Rescue stepped in. Chico was then taken to a veterinary hospital for care and is now living with a foster caregiver until a permanent home is found. We’re also charmed by his new name, “Toast.”
